Mr Scuba Steve spoke to us about diving and underwater photography. Whilst under water you need a tank of compressed air and a mouth piece to breath. You will also need a mask to see and a buoyancy vest to float.
To photograph underwater you will need a water tight camera housing - there are aluminium models but these tend not to last as well as the plastic/pvc type cases - which ever model you buy you will almost certainly get your camera wet one day, so don't use your new D3. Refraction with camera housing can be a problem - fish eye fronts are designed to avoid this problem
The colours of the spectrum are rapidly filtered as it goes through the water vertically or horizontally - so you need to take your own light source with you to capture all of the colours below. Specialized under water flashes are used and are mounted on brackets well off camera - this is to ensure that all of the sediment and particles between the lens and the subject are not illuminated.
You can't change lenses underwater - so either a zoom or use a lens appropriate for what you want to shoot.
